Dr. Lynn Margulis
advanced the endosymbiotic theory, which hypothesized that mitochondria and chloroplasts arose from bacteria.

Dr. Mary Parke
was instrumental in developing algal culturing techniques, depositing these strains in the MBA algal culture collection, and founding the British Phycological Society.

Dr. Ursula Goodenough
made key contributions to understanding the lifecycle of the model alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Dr. Penny Chisholm
has spent her career characterizing the abundant marine cyanobacterium, Prochlorococcus.
